I first learned to sew around the age of five...

I am originally from Houston, and relocated with my family to the Gunnison Valley in January 2019. I had my first art show in February 2020 at the Gunnison Art Center, where I shared a collection of cross stitches based on the Kubrick film 2001: A Space Odyssey.

Moving from a large metropolitan area to a small mountain town made me very aware of the importance of community and individual responsibility to maintain the beautiful landscape we are all so blessed to call home. I want to apply my skill set to extend the lives of materials otherwise destined for landfills.

My parents were aware of my creative compulsion from a very young age, and during my K-12 education I took a variety of art classes in and out of school. After high school I took two gap years (I highly recommend) and when I returned to college, I earned a BS in interdisciplinary studies. I taught special education classes in Houston for 10 years for children ranging from pre-kindergarten through 8th grade until a job opportunity came up in Colorado for my husband. We had one child at the time and were excited to make the change. I have been a stay at home mother since the move and we’ve had two more children.

I first learned to sew around the age of five when my maternal grandmother, Helen, came to live with us. She had her children in Kansas in the 40s and 50s when washing clothes was an all day activity. She could make a new shirt faster than washing a dirty one. My mother, Jacquie, learned to sew from her mother, too. Her passion later in life became quilting and she shared that with me, as well. She died earlier this year and left me a substantial fabric stash and MANY machines. Before she died, we fantasized about her moving to Colorado and starting a shop together. Cancer had different plans.

I like to challenge myself, set lofty goals, and help others achieve theirs. Although this is quite the pivot from what my mother and I had in mind, my experiences have led me here. The clarity and certainty I feel moving into this project is not only based on my want to be creative and share that with others, but a need to be a positive part of my chosen community.
